  1. Ask your friends for recommendations of reputable 
     contractors.

  2. Ask the contractor for references from previous jobs.
      
  3. Get at least 3 detailed estimates from three reputable
      builders.

  4. For work over $600.00 use a licensed contractor.

  5. Investigate the contractor's background.

  6. Ask the contractor for proof of Worker's Compensation
      and Liability Insurance.  Ask to see their current
      Builders License which usually is renewed every two
      years.

  7. Require a detailed written contract.

  8. Don't pay too much money up front and never pay in
      full until the job is completely done.  It is your money.

  9. Be careful when looking for repair people during or after
      a natural disaster in your area.

10. For total assurance against non-performance, ask the
      contractor if he can be bonded (insured for your job).
